Skills

The project involves creating postage stamps designed to educate and raise awareness about the East LA Walks, a student-led protest. The aim is to highlight the cultural significance of the movement and honor the students' courageous efforts.
The designs will highlight the student-led nature of the East LA walkouts, a protest in which students demanded equitable education, including college prep and culturally relevant courses. This movement wasn’t just about academic reform but also about Chicano pride, which we’ll reflect through the visual language of activist art from the 1960s.

RESEARCH

The stamps will evoke the bold, graphic style of printmaking inspired by the activist artwork of that era, which raised awareness and celebrated culture. The aim is to honor the student’s resilience and its lasting impact on education and cultural pride.

IDEATION

COLORS

A bold palette inspired by the Mexican flag's colors rich reds, greens, and whites to honor Chicano identity and resilience. And accents of marigold yellow add warmth, evoking themes of remembrance and celebration.

VISUAL LANDSCAPE

These stamps will be bold, expressive style of Chicano muralists and the raw, handmade quality of protest signage crafted during pivotal activist movements. Each stamp incorporates symbolic elements central to Chicano culture, paying homage to the legacy of printmaking within the movement. The result is a series that not only captures the spirit of resistance but also celebrates cultural heritage with authenticity and pride.
The stamps will debut at a Hispanic Heritage Month event in East LA, highlighting the walkouts' pivotal role in Chicano history. Through art and cultural celebration, the festival will honor the legacy of the movement and raise awareness about its lasting impact.
